It sits unassumingly on the corner of University and Main. A quiet hum can be heard from cars traveling through old downtown Norman. ESPN is on the TV and I have a feeling the channel is rarely, if ever, changed. Black and white tile sits below my feet and a shabby counter in front of me holds an extensive assortment of grooming tools. I feel comfortable and in the company of friends.
None of the staunch haughtiness of a salon, and no unsettling incompetence found at some dime-a-dozen haircut joint. University Barber has the haircut experience just right and I couldn’t be more pleased.
Owners Josh, Shane and Nick have been friends since the 6th grade (Josh and Shane being brothers), but they aren’t that exclusive trio of buds that won’t let you in on the fun. If it’s your second time in they’ll know your name, and if it’s your third, they’ll know your story. Conversations pass in and out of the shop as customers come and go and you’re always welcome to join in. The shop provides an open forum for all banter related to sports, girls and things that go fast.
I often forget I’m having my hair cut. It’s when the warm shaving cream touches the nape of my neck that I’m reminded of the quality of cut I’m getting. Nick flips out his open-blade razor and, with precision, finishes the edges around the ears and down the neck.
I leave with a smile and a cool tingle on my neck from the aftershave.
